What is it?

“Friends of Joel” is a nonprofit organization, formed to raise money solely for the educational enhancement of the students at Joel Elementary School.  This enhancement comes in the form of year-round cultural events sponsored and produced by “Friends of Joel” as well as other enrichment based school-wide programs.

Who are you?

FOJ, as we like to say…is YOU! Yes, you! We are comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, townspeople and local businesses who want to help make Joel School the best it can be.

Why do we need an organization like this at Joel?

Think of FOJ as your beloved Grandmother or Uncle, who slips you a $20 bill whenever they see you—just to help you out! That’s kind of like us, we want to provide those extras that make our children’s educational experience so exciting and enriching! FOJ identifies and hires your children’s monthly cultural assemblies.  These assemblies compliment the curriculum and offer one more opportunity to help your children learn.  Any excess funds raised each year go directly to purchase valuable equipment and supplies for the teaching staff, which were not included in the schools’ annual budget.  Activities like Project Adventure, Cinco de Mayo, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, and playground equipment have all benefited from our fundraising.  FOJ also sponsors the annual Sports-a-thon, 3rd Grade Celebration, Teachers’ Appreciation Luncheons and numerous other school run programs throughout the year.

How much time do I have to give?

Let’s be honest, we are all busy…very, very busy! That is what is so great about being a part of FOJ…you give as much or as little as you want to give!  It’s supposed to be fun, and make you feel good about doing something for your kids, and your community!

Joel School really is a family, even though we are one of the largest elementary schools in the State of Connecticut. Like many families, we have working parents, stay at home parents, grandparents, you name it. But each of these people have different schedules and different talents.  Find an event or fundraiser that interests you, and give an hour or maybe more! Bake for Monster Mash, make phone calls, type up the newsletter, help the kids find books at Book Fair, take pictures for the website, volunteer your artistic prowess, or your bookkeeping skills—you get the idea! We have eight meetings per year and we encourage all parents to attend. We also have openings for Committee Chairs and Officers’ positions, so send us an email if you would like to know more.  You can decide what works best for you!  Believe me, we are willing to take whatever you are generous enough to offer!
